SIF Data Update – 30 June 2025

The activities of the Network for the Study of Mycological Diversity (NMD) continue through the Fungi Information System (SIF), which collects, processes and publishes data useful for the study and census of fungal diversity in Italy.

As of 30 June 2025, SIF includes a total of 5,850 surveys, of which over 4,500 were conducted in the field, and more than 1,200 come from historical or archive sources. A total of 1,109 fungal species have been recorded, contributing to the creation of a national macromycetes census database.

A specific focus is dedicated to conservation and genetic analysis: 40 samples have been sent to the fungarium, including 5 for conservation purposes and 35 for genetic analyses, which have been completed and published.

SIF also enables the monitoring of fungi in Natura 2000 habitats, with 793 species recorded so far in these areas.

The database includes key information for fungal conservation: 67 species are listed in the IUCN Global Fungal Red List, and 11 species are included in the Italian Red List of Flora. Among them, Peziza pseudoammophila and Pleurotus nebrodensis are classified as Critically Endangered (CR); Entoloma bloxamii, Hericium erinaceus, Fomitiporia pseudopunctata, Porpolomopsis calyptriformis, and Alessioporus ichnusanus as Endangered (EN). Rubroboletus dupainii and Poronia punctata are classified as Vulnerable (VU). Psathyrella ammophila is Near Threatened (NT), and Neoalpova rubescens is Data Deficient (DD).

The species Fomitiporia pseudopunctata and Rhizopogon rocabrunae have not yet been recorded in the SIF.

The continuous update of SIF is the result of a shared effort involving ISPRA, mycologists and local contributors, with the goal of strengthening the knowledge and protection of fungal diversity in Italy.
