New species to science with isotype housed in the ISPRA fungarium (IFI)

A new fungal species, Coprinellus dilectissimus Voto & Maraia sp. nov., has recently been described. It was discovered in the Nordio Forest (Veneto, Italy) and published in the journal Mycological Observations (vol. 14, 2025).

The species was described on the basis of morphological and phylogenetic analyses, which confirm its status as a new species within the genus Coprinellus (family Psathyrellaceae). The study includes a phylogenetic analysis based on ITS sequences, placing C. dilectissimus in a well-supported clade clearly distinct from related species.

Of particular significance is the preservation of the isotype in the ISPRA fungarium (IFI 283), highlighting the role of scientific collections as reference material for taxonomic research and for the long-term conservation of mycological heritage.
