JoNeF – 2023-24 Cycle
Fungi are in a separate kingdom, are megadiverse, and have important functional roles, such as decomposition and nutrient cycling, that are not or little duplicated in other kingdoms
Participating Countries

The JoNeF 2023-2024 project involved 21 European countries and their scientific and environmental institutions:
-
- Albania: National Environment Agency
- Croatia: State Inspectorate of the Republic of Croatia
- France: INRAE
- Greece: Forest Research Institute – Elgo Dimitra, University of Thessaly
- Hungary: Ministry of Agriculture
- Iceland: Icelandic Institute of Natural History
- Ireland: Teagasc
- Italy: Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research – ISPRA
- Kosovo: Ministry of Environment Spatial Planning and Infrastructure, Universiteti i Prishtinës
- Latvia: Latvian Museum of Natural History

- Society for the Protection of Underground Networks (SPUN)
JoNeF Survey Report
The first product of the JoNeF project was the JoNeF Survey Report, approved by the General Assembly during the meeting held on June 26-28, 2024.
JoNeF Guidance
The second key product was the JoNeF Guidance, titled:
“JONEF PROJECT: TOWARDS COMMON PROCEDURES FOR MACROFUNGI. State-of-the-art and recommendations for implementing conservation in Europe.”
The Guidance will be reviewed by the General Assembly in the first half of 2025.
Key Events
- Site visits in Italy, Bucharest, and Thessaloniki: These visits were crucial opportunities for partners to share experiences and methodologies.
- Participation in the 12th International Mycological Congress (12IMC): From August 10-15, 2024, JoNeF was presented in Maastricht, contributing to the global discussion on fungal conservation.
Future Perspectives
The JoNeF project will continue with a proposed second phase for 2025-2027. This phase aims to develop a common European framework for collecting macrofungi data and indicators.
