JoNeF 2025 Report “Bridging the Gaps: Fungal Information Systems across Europe” Approved by the IMPEL General Assembly
The IMPEL General Assembly has approved the JoNeF 2025 Report, Bridging the Gaps: Fungal Information Systems across Europe. Mapping national fungal databases and their integration potential.
The report represents the first outcome of the second JoNeF cycle (2025–2027) and provides an updated overview of fungal information systems and databases across Europe, examining their governance, interoperability, accessibility and integration potential within national and international biodiversity infrastructures.
Based on a survey conducted across several European countries, the report highlights the substantial amount of fungal data already available through the work of public authorities, universities, research institutions, associations and non-governmental organisations. At the same time, it identifies common challenges, including limited interoperability, lack of harmonised standards, insufficient funding and shortages of specialised personnel.
The report emphasises the growing role of fungal information in biodiversity monitoring, environmental reporting and conservation policy development, supporting the integration of fungi into national and European biodiversity strategies.
To support the dissemination of the report’s findings, JoNeF produced two accompanying videos that have been presented during the General Assembly.
The first video summarises the main results of the JoNeF Report 2025, highlighting the current status of fungal information systems across Europe and the need for stronger coordination, interoperability and policy integration.
The second video, featuring Celeste Santos e Silva, reflects on the ecological importance of fungi and the need to make existing fungal knowledge more accessible and usable for society and decision-makers.
