JoNeF publishes its first scientific paper on macrofungi conservation in Europe
A new milestone for JoNeF: the network’s recommendations for fungal conservation in Europe have been published in the international peer-reviewed journal Conservation Science and Practice.
We are pleased to announce the publication of the first scientific paper dedicated to JoNeF (Joint Network for wild Fungi). The paper, entitled “Joint Network for wild Fungi (JoNeF)’s recommendations for implementing conservation of macrofungi in Europe”, presents the JoNeF project, summarizes the achievements of its first project cycle (2023–2024), and outlines key recommendations developed by the team to strengthen the integration of fungi into biodiversity conservation policies and practices across Europe.
The publication highlights four priority actions: including macrofungi in Habitats Directive reporting, strengthening the presence of fungi in Natura 2000 Standard Data Forms, developing habitat-specific fungal species lists for monitoring purposes, and promoting the explicit recognition of fungi in biodiversity legislation and conservation strategies.
This publication marks an important milestone for JoNeF and contributes to raising awareness of the role of fungi in environmental decision-making and biodiversity conservation efforts throughout Europe.
