What we do

National Fungi Census

Since from May 2021, in collaboration with the Italian Botanical Society (SBI), the Network has developed the census of macromycetes on the national territory initiative.
The census was created to collect and publish data on the surveys of macromycetes fungi in a public national database available to all users, called Fungi Information System – SIF.
The data are collected and sent to the Network by the subjects who adhere according to protocols and standards defined by the Scientific Committee. The transmission takes place using specific IT applications (web and mobile apps).

Quality certification

In the year 2021 the process called “Data acquisition and systematization process for census, monitoring and conservation of Fungi on the Italian territory” received the quality certification ISO 9001:2015 quality certification. The ISO 9001:2015 certification analyzes the individual stages of the process, from the registration of contributors to field activities to the publication of data, verifying that they are documented by standardizing data acquisition operations. In the process there are control points for the verification of compliance of mycological data with the standards established by the Network.

The Network has developed a database called the Fungi Information System (FIS), which contains the surveys sent by the contributors after standards verification.
The database contains both field surveys and historical surveys.
For each survey, fields relating to the genus and species and, in particular, to the associated habitat, as well as the name of the contributor are reported.
The provides functions of dissemination, publication and use of data on the basis of open licenses

The fungarium is the structure used for the conservation of fungal samples (exsiccata) sent by the contributors.
This structure is located in a dedicated room at the ISPRA Zoological Museum in Ozzano dell’Emilia (BO).

Molecular genetics

The genetics laboratories are located in the Conservation Genetics Area of ISPRA headquarters in Ozzano dell’Emilia (BO) and since 2022 is also responsible for carrying out genetic analyzes on the fungal samples deposited in the fungarium.
